Sperm at the heart of all paradoxes

FLUIDS ACCORDING TO MAÏA

Let it be said: sex is an activity (and an organ) that wets. This summer, Maïa Mazaurette puts on her diving suit to introduce us to these fluids. Honor to men, we start with sperm, a liquid between desire, sacredness and disgust.

– Factsheet : Latin sperma, spermatis, semen is obviously composed of spermatozoa, but not only. It contains, according to Wikipedia, seminal fluid, polymorphonuclear macrophages, growth hormones, stem cells, nutrients, trace elements and epithelial cells. If you got the urge to feed yourself with cum (we call that the seminophagy), each ejaculation would provide you with 150 milligrams of protein – which is to say not much. Notice to the 45% of French women who have already swallowed (FIFG 2021), be aware that you are dieting in the nails: the sperm displays a Nutri-score A (provided of course that your provider does not have a sexually transmitted disease, such as herpes or hepatitis B, the full list is here).

– Figure : a man produces 1,500 sperm cells per second (National Geographic), which is equivalent to an average of 1,500 terabytes of information per ejaculation… despite sperm quality halving in less than fifty years (Human Reproduction Update2022).

– Hygiene : in the minutes following an ejaculation, the sperm changes from a gelatinous aspect to a much more liquid consistency, whose life expectancy in a dry environment is counted in years. Watch out for stains (especially on little dresses, as former US President Bill Clinton can testify)!

– Symbolic: Epicurus spoke of sperm as“a detached part of soul and body”. Saint Thomas Aquinas evoked a “divine substance”. Just that ! The sex therapist Gérard Tixier takes note of this glorification in the only work entirely devoted to sperm and published in 1994 (The SpermPUF): “We have the feeling that the man is endowed with a real sperm awareness which pushes him to assimilate his sperm to droplets of the brain, to lively words. » Not reassuring for the future of male intelligence, when we observe the fall of spermatozoa on a global scale… The sacred nature of sperm is however easily explained by the concern for fertility of the great civilizations. With the key, contradictory injunctions: the seed is an offering, but you have to know how to retain it.
