TO REMEMBER

Animation, American box office champion in 2023. Released this Friday, June 2 in the United States, Spider-Man – Across the Spider-Verse achieved the second best start of the year, behind that of Super Mario Bros.with 120.5 million dollars in revenue according to estimates published on Sunday evening, June 4.

Failing to do better than Nintendo’s mustachioed plumber, Marvel’s Spider-Man is ahead of some of the biggest blockbusters of the year: Guardians of the Galaxy 3 (118.4 million), Ant-Man 3 (106.1 million) or even The little Mermaid (95.6 million)… which it dethrones at the top of the weekly box office.

If you’re one of those who think Spider-Man: Next Generation’s box office doesn’t live up to its quality ($384.3 million worldwide, $190.2 million in the US), Across the Spider-Verse comes to set the record straight and shows that the number of its fans has grown over the years.

The most glaring proof is the start of the second opus in the trilogy, almost four times higher than that of the first (120.5 million against 35.4 at the end of 2018). In view of the enthusiasm it arouses, the feature film can envisage a good career at the box office as the summer blockbuster season is about to be in full swing.

Leader last week, The Little Mermaid therefore lost one place… and 57.5% of its receipts compared to the weekend of its release, a drop which blockbusters are accustomed to. The live remake of the Disney classic should nevertheless cross the milestone of 200 million greenbacks on American soil in the coming days.

Second (and last) novelty present in this Top 10, The Boogeyman proves that horror is always successful by entering directly on the third step of the podium, in front of a trio of large machines made up of Guardians of the Galaxy 3, Fast & Furious X and Super Mario Bros., still well placed for the ninth week in a row. And stands today as the 19th highest grossing hit of all time worldwide.

Finally, note that the biggest fall in this ranking is for Gerard Butler. With -67.1% in revenue compared to the previous weekend, its Kandahar is already guaranteed to do less well than Mayday, his latest feature film which landed with a total of 32.1 million greenbacks.
