Spirit AeroSystems expected to fall after the call for a strike launched by its employees – 06/22/2023 at 14:55

(AOF) – Spirit AeroSystems is expected to fall sharply in the pre-market on Wall Street after the strike call launched by its employees (represented by the organizations International Association of Machinists, IAM, and Aerospace Workers. This strike comes after the dismissal of a salary proposal from the management of the maker of aerospace parts at the Wichita, Kansas plant. As of June 22, all employees represented by the IAM must not report to work, but will be paid for their normal working hours.

“We are disappointed that our IAM-represented employees rejected our four-year contract offer and voted to strike. We believe our fair and competitive offer recognizes the contributions of our employees,” said Spirit Aerosystems, component manufacturer of aircraft structures.

The end of a duopoly?

For several decades, the American Boeing and the European Airbus have shared 99% of the world market for airliners with more than 110 seats. This market weighs more than 100 billion dollars per year. However, this duopoly seems to be weakened in 2022 for several reasons. First, for the first time, two medium-haul single-aisle aircraft, the Chinese Comac’s C919 and the Russian Irkut’s MC-21, are about to enter service. Added to this is the Boeing 737 MAX crisis. With the cessation of deliveries of this aircraft between 2019 and 2021, the production balance has been broken. In 2021 Boeing posted 340 deliveries, with Airbus remaining well ahead with 611.
