Mug shot makes Trump’s cash register ring

Donald Trump is the first former US President to have an official police photo. Observers are puzzled as to whether the recording will harm or help him in the election campaign. As far as finances go, the answer is clear: the Republicans are raking in the cash.

Former US President Donald Trump has raised $7.1 million in donations since the mugshot he took as part of his prisoner registration in the US state of Georgia, according to his campaign spokesman. This was announced by Steven Cheung on X, formerly Twitter, on Saturday (local time).

On Friday alone, Trump raised $4.18 million in donations, making it the highest-grossing day of his campaign to date, Cheung wrote. The ex-president currently faces four charges related to his false claims that the 2020 election was stolen and his supporters’ attack on the US Capitol in Washington DC on January 6, 2021.

After appointments so far in Manhattan, Miami and Washington, Trump had to be formally arrested in Atlanta on Thursday on allegations related to his 2020 election defeat. He remains free on previously negotiated $200,000 bail and his plea is expected on September 5. The 77-year-old has denied all allegations.

The marketing machine is running

In recent polls for the Republican primary campaign, he leads the other presidential candidates by a huge margin. Trump, who was elected president in 2016 but lost to Democrat Joe Biden in 2020, is now running again as a candidate for the Republican Party with the goal of being re-elected US president. Donald Trump is the first ex-president in US history to have a mugshot.

Trump himself contributed to the donation hype. Only a few hours after his criminal investigation in a prison, the former US President threw on the marketing machine: T-shirts, mugs, stickers – all with the mugshot of the fierce looking Trump and the slogan “Never surrender” ). The fundraising emails immediately sent out by the Trump team luridly said: “This mugshot will forever go down in history as a symbol of America’s resistance to tyranny” – including the request for supporters to pay $47 (about 43 50 euros) for a t-shirt with the picture.
