Despite a recent rise in prices, dictated by inflation, the prices of premium formulas will soon increase on French soil. The reason ? A new tax put in place by the French government which affects streaming services.
Spotify Premium subscriptions will soon be the most expensive in Europe
This streaming tax aims to force streaming platforms to participate in the financing of the CNM, the National Music Center, an organization which subsidizes the various professions linked to the music industry. The amount of the tax is estimated at 15 million euros per year for all platforms and Spotify, as the leader in the sector, will be the main contributor.
The streaming service had already reacted a few months ago. After the vote on this hard-fought tax, Spotify announced the cancellation of its sponsorship of two of the most important festivals in France, namely Les Francofolies de La Rochelle and Le Printemps de Bourges. “ We have always been very clear on this matter – we simply cannot absorb additional taxes », Reminds the company today.
From now on, it will be up to users to finance the difference with a price increase. “ Clearly, all our French premium users will see their subscription increase, and will now pay the highest package within the European Union », Indicates Spotify in its open letter. The details of the increases have not been communicated, but the increase should occur in the coming weeks.
