Spotify: children’s songs or guilty pleasures… Here’s how to stop them polluting your playlists

THE music streaming service is rolling out a new option that will delight parents, as well as anyone who shares their user profile.

Spotify is as appreciated for its interface and its performance as for its absolutely formidable recommendation algorithm after several weeks of listening.

Each week, Spotify offers each user personalized playlists, adapted to their favorite genres and artists, with formidable efficiency in the choice of songs offered which allows them to constantly broaden their musical horizons.

If you’re the only one using your Spotify profile, you get a great experience. This is not the case for all those sharing their account with members of their family, and in particular children.

Long listening sessions, via a smartphone, a tablet or from the connected speaker at home, can completely distort the results offered by Spotify’s algorithms and include titles that have nothing to do with it.

An option being rolled out to all Spotify accounts

Spotify now has a solution with a new option called “Exclude from your Taste Profile”. This option allows you, for each playlist listened to by a member of your family, not to take it into account in the preparation of personalized playlists. It also works if you’re listening to a bit of a shameful playlist, and you don’t want those few delicious bad-tasting minutes to carry over to your next selections.

To activate this new option, nothing could be simpler. Just click on the “…” button next to each playlist, then click on “Exclude from your Taste Profile”. Spotify will remove plays from songs and will not include them in future playlists. It will be available on both Android and iOS mobile apps, on the web and from the platform’s desktop apps.

For now, the option only seems to be offered in the United States, and it has not yet appeared on our own account at the time of writing this article. Deployments can take anywhere from a few days to several weeks to reach all user accounts, so be patient, it’s only a matter of time before you can clean up your playlists of your toddlers’ favorite Disney songs.
