Spotify: does vertical video à la TikTok really have to rot all our apps?

Spotify will completely revamp the design of its home page with a design designed to generate more engagement and encourage more discovery. For this, the application will look much more like platforms like TikTok or Instagram by favoring, in particular, infinite scroll and automatic reading.

The music streaming service took advantage of its Stream On event to present these new features.

The recommended content in vertical parade

We thought Spotify was spared by this trend, but the application will finally adopt it too. In a blog post, the Swedish giant announces an update “ for deeper discovery and more meaningful connections between artists and fans “. Thus, by clicking on the Music or Podcast and Shows sections, the user will access a vertical feed through which he can scroll as long as he wishes and thus preview the content.

As for music, this stream will offer songs, playlists or albums that will scroll in autoplay to give an overview of things to listen to, all accompanied by video clips. All you have to do is click if you are interested, in order to save the songs or add them to a playlist. For podcasts, the process is similar, with episodes suggested in vertical format and accompanied by video if the recording was filmed. The audiobook section will also benefit from this revamp, but it is currently only in English-speaking countries.


Better distinguish between formats

With this update, the Enhance Tool will be renamed to Smart Shuffle. In addition to adding suggestions to playlists, it will also change their order in order to reorganize them in a more optimized way.

The new design is much more dynamic and visual, presenting more similarities with the flagship applications which exploit the infinite scroll, functionality largely democratized by TikTok. Also, it seems to distinguish more between the different formats offered by Spotify with a redesigned dedicated space, which may seem logical as the application has diversified.

Spotify explains that its update is being deployed and should already, or very soon, be accessible to all users.
