Spotify is moving into a new area with educational videos

Spotify is testing an educational videos feature in the UK. This initiative allows it to further diversify the content offered on its platform.

The number 1 in music streaming is definitely no longer limited to music. Since 2019, the firm has invested massively to become number 1 in podcasting. It has also embarked on the adventure of audio books, for the moment only available in its English-speaking markets.

It is therefore not really a surprise to learn that Spotify is now coveting the field of educational videos, which are similar to private lessons offered to users of the platform.

Spotify capitalizes on the success of podcasts

The feature, only rolled out in the UK at the moment, offers videos from four educational video providers: BBC Maestro, Skillshare, Thinkific and PLAYvirtuoso. The lessons cover different themes, such as healthy living, creativity, music and business.

To access this new type of content, users will see a new pill icon appear at the top of the Spotify mobile app home screen. They can also find it on the service’s search and navigation interfaces.

According to Spotify, such a novelty is more than sensible. “ Many of our users use podcasts and audiobooks daily for their learning needs, and we believe this highly engaged community will be interested in access to quality content from video course creators, and in possibility to buy it says Babar Zafar, vice president of product development. About half of subscribers to the Premium platform have listened to podcasts on the theme of education or personal development, the company specifies in a press release.

A role in “Supremium”?

During its testing period, the service offers courses using a freemium model. Thus, subscribers, paying or not, can access at least two video lessons per course for free, but will have to pay to access the rest. This technique was also used when launching audiobooks.

For the moment, Spotify does not specify whether the educational videos will subsequently be deployed on a larger scale and in other markets. As suggested The Verge, it is possible that this content will play a role in a future “Supremium” subscription. This is rumored to include access to lossless audio, more hours of audiobook listening, advanced mixing tools, and more track filtering options.
