Spotify just announced a new AI-powered voice translation feature, allowing podcast creators to stream their episodes in multiple languages.

To deploy this new tool, the streaming giant collaborated with OpenAI, the company that created ChatGPT. Moreover, conversational AI has just been equipped with a functionality allowing it to respond by voice. Spotify’s translation system is based on Whisper. This voice transcription tool designed by OpenAI can both transcribe English speech and translate other languages into English.

First episodes in Spanish, German and French

What Spotify offers goes even further. The creator will not only be able to translate their podcast into multiple languages, but also narrate it in their own synthesized voice. “ This Spotify-developed tool leverages the latest innovations, including OpenAI’s all-new voice generation technology, to reproduce the style of the original speaker, allowing for a more authentic, more personal and more natural than traditional dubbing. A podcast episode originally recorded in English can now be made available in other languages while retaining the speaker’s distinctive vocal characteristics », Details the firm in a blog post.

For starters, Spotify has partnered with several English-speaking podcast creators. Their episodes will first be translated into Spanish, but French and German versions will also be available in the coming weeks.

By reproducing the voice of the creator, Voice Translation allows listeners around the world to discover and be inspired by new podcasters in a more authentic way than ever before », Enthuses Ziad Sultan, vice-president of personalization for the Swedish platform.

Breaking the language barrier

For the moment, Spotify nevertheless remains cautious and does not reveal to what extent and on what scale the translation tool will be deployed in the long term. However, both paid subscribers and free users will be able to benefit from it.

For several years, the company has increased its efforts and investments to develop its podcast ecosystem, in addition to already having an empire in the music streaming sector. With her new tool, she hopes to allow creators to reach a wider audience by breaking the language barrier. “ We will continue to explore new ways to overcome barriers to storytelling “, she promises.
