Spotify (quietly) announces the closure of the Greenroom fund

Greenroom is a fund launched in June 2021 for live content creators. It was intended to attract creators who wanted to do live shows with celebrities, influencers or other creators through weekly performance-based payments.

This means of creating a program similar to live radio was to compete with Clubhouse. On April 12, the company announced a name change from Greenroom to Spotify Live. In the process, the contestants received an email on Monday, which The Verge was able to obtain, announcing that the program would not be maintained, but specifying that the company planned to “move towards other initiatives for creators. live”.

The feature still exists

Although the background is not maintained, the live functionality is maintained and has been made more easily accessible to listeners. A list of programs exists and includes shows with celebrities like Hasan Minhaj, Swedish House Mafia or DJ Akademiks.

Difficult to know if the service had been officially launched or not. In June 2021, the official site announced effective payments “later this summer”, but the same page announced (early April) a start in 2022.

According to the Wayback Machine, that would mean the program never actually started and simply won’t see the light of day. Contacted by our colleagues, Spotify did not respond to any questions regarding the amounts paid to creators through this fund.
