Spotted in the basement – “Dangerous snake” caused woman to panic

An excited woman called the Oberndorf fire department on Monday: A snake in the basement! But the animal quickly turned out to be harmless…

Ten emergency services from the Oberndorf volunteer fire department were alerted on Monday morning because a snake was supposedly found in the basement of an agitated homeowner in the Ziegelhaiden district. The Floriani responded with a fire engine and a command vehicle, and ten emergency services accompanied them. Nine other Floriani were on standby at the fire station. Once on site, however, the fire department quickly realized that the snake was just a harmless and non-venomous slowworm. The animals actually spend the cold months in frost-proof holes in the ground, where they freeze. They only come to the surface again in April. With its long, legless body, the slow worm looks similar to a snake, but it is a lizard. The fire department collected the animal and released it outside. After she had searched the remaining basement rooms, she moved back in.
