Square Enix announces Dragon Quest Champions, a new mobile game that mixes RPG and Battle Royale

Transforming its iconic JRPG licenses to fit into the mobile and multiplayer gaming mold no longer scares Square-Enix. Despite the spectacular failure of Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier (which closed its doors last week), the publisher is not cured of this strange whim and now wishes to try the experiment with DragonQuest, a series that has proven itself a little more on mobiles in Japan (even if the saga has experienced failures) and which is therefore more subject to potential success. During a special stream announced a few days ago, we were able to discover Dragon Quest Championswhich wants to keep the spirit of the series while adding a good dose of multiplayer features.

An astonishing mix of genres

Dragon Quest Champions presents us with a combat system that turns out to be quite classic for the series, with turn-based battles, but with a little twist. Here, in addition to the usual monsters of the series, you can meet other participants to face them in a duel. A Tournament mode with 50 players will be presentin which everyone will have to fight until only one winner remains, all in real time.

Square Enix doesn’t want to scare away those allergic to Battle Royale fashion either, which is why a single player mode with a story will be available with many quests to complete.

The game does not yet have a release date, but it will enter beta from February 6 to 13 in Japan, on mobile and iOS platforms. You can find the full presentation above, in Japanese. No availability has yet been announced for the West.
