The Square Enix studio, behind big names in video games like the Final Fantasy series or Dragon Quest, intends to use artificial intelligence to develop its future titles.
If some development studios are already calling on theartificial intelligence to design their games, they don’t shout it from the rooftops. The technology is still debated, particularly with the multiple ongoing lawsuits for copyright infringement to which ChatGPT is the subject, for example. Square Enixto whom we owe, among other things, the famous series Final Fantasy Or Dragon Questdoes not bother with tweezers and declares loud and clear that he wants use AI in the development of future games.
In a letter from the president of the firm, Takashi Kiryu, the latter praises ChatGPT exactly. “The months that followed [sa sortie] have seen a rapid succession of new service and content launches that have extended generative AI to a variety of areas closely related to digital entertainment, including images, video and music. I believe that generative AI has the potential to not only reshape what we create, but also fundamentally change the processes by which we create, including programming.”
Square Enix studio wants to “aggressively” use AI for its future games
Takashi Kiryu continues very explicitly: “we also intend to be aggressive in the application of AI and other cutting-edge technologies […]. In the short term, our focus will be on improving our development productivity and making our marketing efforts more sophisticated. Longer term, we hope to leverage these technologies to create new forms of content for consumers, as we believe technological innovation represents business opportunities.”

If the will is clear, the man is careful not to specify which title would be partly developed using AI, nor in what field. The mention of music, among other things, is already raising eyebrows on social networks. Especially when you know the talented composers who have worked for Square Enix games. Maybe the future Final Fantasy 7 Rebirthscheduled for February 29 on PlayStation 5, will be a pioneer in this area?
