There is no exact date yet, but one thing is now certain: the highly anticipated second season of “Squid Game” will start in 2024.
The second season of the hit series “Squid Game,” eagerly awaited by millions of fans, will be shown on Netflix later this year. The streaming service announced the new episodes of the South Korean survival drama series in a letter to shareholders, as reported by “Variety”, among others. “Despite last year’s strikes, which delayed the launch of some titles, we have a large, ambitious program ahead of us for 2024,” the letter said. The name of “Squid Game” also appears in the following list.
Netflix also announces the sequels to “Bridgerton”, “Drive to Survive”, “Love is Blind”, “Tour de France: Unchained” as an integral part of the repertoire for the current year. In addition, new productions such as “3 Body Problem” by the “Game of Thrones” makers, “Griselda” with Sofia Vergara (51), “The Gentlemen” by star director Guy Ritchie (55), “Eric” with Benedict Cumberbatch ( 47) or “Avatar: The Las Airbender” announced. In addition, the streaming provider will release the fourth season of the popular series “Emily in Paris” in 2024.
Netflix boss: “The ‘Squid Game’ universe has just begun”
The first nine episodes of the premiere season of “Squid Game” written by creator Hwang Dong-hyuk (52) were first shown in 2021 and quickly turned out to be a huge surprise success for Netflix. In total, the series was nominated for 14 Emmy Awards, of which it won six. It also won three Golden Globe Awards, including Best TV Drama. “Squid Game” is considered the most successful series ever shown on Netflix.
After months of speculation, the streaming portal confirmed in January 2022 that a second season would be produced. Netflix boss Ted Sarandos (59) said at the time when asked about a possible sequel: “Absolutely. The ‘Squid Game’ universe has only just begun.” So far, in addition to the first season, a game show modeled on the series called “Squid Game: The Challenge” has already been produced.
