Squid Game season 2: the final twist announces a very dark sequel

Squid Game Season 1 revealed the identity of the mysterious Front Man, and this man’s past could portend an even darker theme for Season 2.

Spoiler alert! If you haven’t seen Squid Game, this article contains some key plot twists.

It’s been almost 18 months since Squid Game landed on Netflix with the dazzling success that we know. Season 2 is now eagerly awaited by fans. Theories are therefore beginning to form. And starting from the season 1 finale reveal, where we learned the identity of the mysterious Front Man – namely that he is the brother of policeman Hwang Jun-ho (Wi Ha-joon), we can imagine a rather dark theme for season 2.

Hwang Jun-ho thought his brother had died while participating in the Squid Game. However, it turns out that Hwang In-ho, the masked agent or the Front Man (Lee Byung-hun) as he is more commonly known, actually won the game in 2015! Without knowing how or why, he became the game creator’s right-hand man and the leader of the masked guardians. Season 2 could just teach us more about this character.

Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk touched on the topic of Front Man and Season 2 via Forbes and said that he would like to delve more into the past of In-ho who was also a police officer:

I think the problem of police officers is not just a problem in Korea. I see it in the news all over the world. This is a question I wanted to raise. Maybe in the second season I can talk more about it.

Since Squid Game is centered around the corruption of society and how it affects the powerful versus the weak, it makes sense for Season 2 to explore how In-ho ends up on the side of the powerful and how the other guards are on that side. arrived there too.

Are the other guards also former police officers?

If the Front Man is a former policeman, and creator Hwang Dong-hyuk wants to dig into the less than stellar underside of the police, it would make sense for the masked guards to come from a similar background. The game is for people who are so in debt that they are willing to fight to the death to gain financial security.

Perhaps in the case of the guards, this deadly competition gives disgraced cops the opportunity to wield their power in a new way. Little is known about the origin of the guards before they put on their masks. At one point, a player asks a guard what they did to become heartless murderers.

This question has never been answered. But we can also deduce that they come from the police forces, because they seem already trained in the use of weapons and desensitized to violence.

What if it was chance?

Another theory has the wind in its sails on the origin of these guards. It is linked to when series hero Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) was recruited to participate in the game. He and the recruiter played a game that involved a blue card and a red one. Before starting, Seong Gi-hun chose the blue card, and since he lost and ended up becoming a participant in the game, a theory developed that if he had chosen the red tile, he would have become the one of the guards dressed in red.

Hwang Dong-hyuk delved into this theory, stating that the audience was “definitely more creative“that him and that whichever tile Gi-hun chooses, he would have ended up participating in the Squid Game if he had decided to call the number indicated by the card. This therefore implies that the guards seen in their uniforms reds are not just desperate people recruited from the streets.

Could Gi-Hun return in Season 2 as a Guardian?

Season 1 ended with Gi-hun backtracking from his flight to the United States and deciding to take action against the organizers of the games that turned his life upside down. We don’t really know how he intends to go about it. However, with the fairly strong likelihood that Season 2 could dig deeper into the inner workings of the games, including the identities and nature of the masked guards, it could be that Gi-hun arrives at the mysterious island this time around. pretending to be one of them.

It’s no small feat, but it’s important to remember that Gi-hun is now part of the wealthy and powerful elite. The central idea of Squid Game is that money makes the world go round, and that the wealthy have immediate power over those who have none.

This lesson explains why Gi-hun was so hesitant to use his prize money since he is entirely stained with blood. Still, the best way to use his newfound wealth and power might be to use it to accomplish his goal and end the brutal treatment of desperate people. And a good place to start would be to slip through the masked guards.

However, we will have to wait to have the answers to all these questions. Season 2 began filming last September. According to the creator, we should not hope to see it arrive on our screens before the end of 2024.
