No series has been more successful on Netflix so far. The maker of “Squid Game” apparently already has some ideas for a second season.
About a month ago, the first season of the series “Squid Game” appeared on Netflix. The survival drama from South Korea quickly became a mega hit. 111 million accounts have looked in since September 17th, as the streaming giant just made popular. This means that “Squid Game” is not only the most successful series in Netflix history to date. Millions of fans are already eagerly waiting for a second season. What could this look like?
What “Squid Game” is about
456 candidates, each of whom are in financial distress, receive invitations to take part in a mysterious game. You will be locked in a secret location and given the chance to win an extraordinarily large amount of prize money. To do this, they have to pass some children’s games. But whoever loses dies.
“I don’t have any sophisticated plans for ‘Squid Game 2’ yet. It makes me really tired just thinking about it,” said Hwang Dong-hyuk (50) at the end of September in conversation with the industry magazine “Variety”. In the meantime, the Seoul-born director and screenwriter seems to have given some thought to how things could possibly continue in a second season.

“It’s true that the first season ended in the open, but I actually thought that this could be a good ending to the whole story,” says Hwang Dong-hyuk in a new interview with “The Hollywood Reporter”. At the end of the season, Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae, 48) doesn’t get on a plane to the USA as originally planned.
According to his own statements, the director wanted to show that one should not be guided by competition in society. Instead, one should consider who created the entire system – “and whether there is the possibility of turning around and facing the whole”. One possibility for a sequel is to take up Gi-hun’s story and shed light on how he will deal with a possible settlement with the people behind the “Squid Game”.
“But there are some other stories in the series that haven’t been addressed yet,” continues Hwang Dong-hyuk. As an example, the director cites the story of the policeman (Wi Ha-jun, 30) and his brother, the front man (Lee Byung-hun, 51). “If I were to create a second season I would like to explore this story. What is going on between the two brothers?” He could also imagine illuminating the story of the man (Gong Yoo, 42) who recruited the candidates for the macabre game.
Hwang Dong-hyuk is not yet sure how to proceed, “I’m just saying that there are many opportunities out there for storylines of a second season”. Since no further episodes have been officially announced yet, it only seems certain that Netflix will probably do everything in its power to realize another season after this mega-success.
