So that was it, the 2021/22 ski season. Our experts Tina Weirather and Marc Berthod take a look back.
The ski season lasted 148 days. More than 21 weeks of fighting for points, crystal balls and, in Beijing, also for Olympic medals. Our two experts, Tina Weirather and Marc Berthod, looked back on the past season on the sidelines of the season finale in Courchevel/Méribel.
Which Swiss have particularly impressed?
Tina Weirather: «With her history Michelle Gisin. She suffered from glandular fever and otherwise had no optimal preparation – and then she is the only one who drives on the podium in slalom, giant slalom and super-G. In addition, Olympic gold and bronze in Beijing; everything really worked out for her. Lara Gut-Behrami was also in a very good mood. It’s a pity that she also had health problems, otherwise there would be no reason why she wasn’t performing. She’s just brilliant at skiing.»
Marc Berthod: «With the overall World Cup, Marco Odermatt has won the highest that can be achieved. To have been the best in all disciplines for a whole season is unique, simply great. It’s great that Feuz and Odermatt get along so well, especially during the inspections in the speed disciplines. They push themselves and push themselves to do their best.”
Who were the positive surprises?
Berthod: “There were several nice individual results, but I would like to single out Niels Hintermann. He had good approaches in the downhill last season, but couldn’t bring it down. This year he had a real run and was also very refreshing off piste. With his successes, he provided additional emotions. »
Weirather: “For women, it was Camille Rast. She has arrived when it comes to podium places. I am particularly counting on her in the years to come. This year she has developed a good basis in the technical disciplines and has been able to gain racing intelligence and experience. It’s also nice that we have a broader squad. This is very important so that the top athletes have ‘back-ups’, after all they can’t deliver every day. On these days the others have to be ready.”
Who or what disappointed?
Weirather: “For me it was disappointing how many athletes missed races because of Corona. That didn’t exist last year when there were stricter measures and there were no spectators, for example. This year it was ‹gräblet› and almost all athletes had to miss 2 weekends. »
Berthod: «On the final weekend we came really close again and were able to put the pressure on. 257 points are now missing in total, you could certainly look for them in the men’s slalom, where we couldn’t take advantage of some very good starting positions after the 1st run. »
Weirather: “That certainly has something to do with the fact that the Austrian women scored 1,300 points more in the speed area than last season. And we also had more health problems. I find it interesting that we traded the gap at the beginning of the season. After that it stayed about the same until the end.”
Switzerland was able to shine at the Olympics…
Weirather: “We had good chances everywhere at the Olympics – and everyone was grabbed, that was bombastic. It’s unbelievable that everything is going so well. In the team, everyone in charge was made hot and well adjusted. This is one of the reasons why the drivers were able to deliver these performances.”
Berthod: «At Feuz, the descent was the last piece of the puzzle that was still missing. You could tell beforehand that it was in the air. Being able to nail it on Day X was absolutely Beat-like. Odermatt’s performance in the giant slalom was also very impressive: It dragged on, it was getting dark and he was the last one up there. Nevertheless, he lived up to expectations and brought it home.”
