  • Samsung unveiled the SSD 990 Pro at Gamescom.
  • The market launch is scheduled for October.
  • The SSD is said to deliver read and write speeds of up to 7,450 MB/s.

The South Korean manufacturer Samsung is a guest at Gamescom in Cologne. The company known for its Galaxy cell phones is showing the new SSD 990 Pro there. With its speed, the memory should be suitable for graphically demanding games on PC and console as well as for tasks such as 3D rendering, 4K video editing and data analysis.

The model is equipped with the latest V-NAND technology and, thanks to a specially developed controller unit, should offer you the highest speed currently available via the PCIe 4.0 interface, according to Samsung. The manufacturer specifies the read speed as up to 7,450 MB/s, while the write speed is said to be 6,900 MB/s. According to Samsung, this corresponds to a performance boost of 55 percent compared to the predecessor SSD 980 Pro.

In addition, Samsung wants to have reduced energy consumption by 50 percent. At the same time, Dynamic Thermal Guard technology ensures that the memory does not overheat.

price and availability

Pre-sales for Samsung’s NVMe SSD 990 Pro will start in mid-October and the official market launch will take place a little later. The manufacturer has not yet given an exact date. The SSD is available in capacities of 1 terabyte for 174.90 euros and 2 terabytes for 324.90 euros.

In 2023, the series is to be supplemented by a model with 4 terabytes. A heat-regulating module and RGB lighting should also be installed there. Thanks to the heat sink, this variant should also be suitable as an SSD for the PS5. A price or a date for this are not yet known.

At the Samsung booth at Gamescom you can not only see the SSD 990 Pro, but also the new Odyssey Ark gaming monitor. The 55-inch curved design should offer a particularly immersive gaming experience. Thanks to Samsung’s gaming hub, it also has Xbox games directly on board.
