Wehen’s bad minutes make Regensburg’s promotion perfect

While the first division team usually dominates in the Bundesliga relegation, the third division team usually wins in the second division relegation. This season too: SSV Jahn Regensburg is promoted again a year after being relegated. SV Wehen Wiesbaden, on the other hand, is relegated straight back down.

SSV Jahn Regensburg has returned to the 2nd Bundesliga, thanks in particular to Dominik Kother. The left winger scored the opening goal in the relegation second leg of the 2-1 (1-0) victory of coach Joe Enochs’ team at SV Wehen Wiesbaden (45th + 2 minutes). Konrad Faber also scored for the third division team after Kother’s assist following a penalty shootout on the other side (47th minute). After the 2-2 draw in the first leg, the Hessians were unable to capitalize on their home advantage despite a late goal from striker Ivan Prtajin (82nd minute) and have to return to the 3rd division after just one year.

However, Wiesbaden had problems with referee Martin Petersen: The Stuttgart referee did not award a penalty seconds after the restart in the second half when Franko Kovacic was knocked over by Oscar Schönfelder. Faber scored the 2-0 goal on the subsequent counterattack. The goal counted after the VAR also had no objections. In the closing stages, the hosts also complained about a handball in the opponent’s penalty area.

In front of 11,000 spectators in the Brita Arena, Regensburg celebrated direct promotion. Left winger Kother kept Regensburg’s hopes alive last Friday with a goal and an assist. Jahn had already managed to move up a division twice before via the relegation round: in 2012, the Upper Palatinate team beat Karlsruher SC, and in 2017, they beat TSV 1860 Munich.

Last year, Wehen secured promotion to the 2nd division in the relegation match against Arminia Bielefeld. The club had previously managed to gain promotion as champions of the Regionalliga Süd (2007) and also via the relegation match (2019). Wiesbaden was only able to avoid immediate relegation at the end of the 2007/08 season.

After a strong first half of the season, SVWW was in a tailspin and parted ways with head coach Markus Kauczinski at the end of April. Interim coach Nils Döring – the 44-year-old had to sit in the stands in the first leg due to a suspension – was able to coach his team from the bench again. After a quarter of an hour, he had to watch as Kother shot just wide of the goal. Prtajin missed the first good chance for the Wiesbaden team, who had not won in eleven competitive matches, five minutes later. Otherwise, the Hessians hardly had any chances in the hectic match with some shortcomings in their play. After the 1:2, they chased an equalizer in vain.
