These are the four pairings in the cup quarterfinals

The winners of the past 29 years are no longer in the quarter-finals of the DFB Cup – this opens up a rare opportunity for the eight remaining clubs. BVB conqueror St. Pauli can prove himself in Berlin, Bochum can continue his home run. A second division team in the semi-finals is already certain.

Last year’s finalist RB Leipzig has to travel to the second division side and Gladbach conquerors Hannover 96 in the quarter-finals of the DFB Cup. VfL Bochum and SC Freiburg meet in the only duel in the Bundesliga. Bundesliga club 1. FC Union Berlin welcomes promotion hopefuls FC St. Pauli, who have already traveled to the capital on the possible route to the final in the Berlin Olympic Stadium, in an explosive clash. Hamburger SV also plays against second division rivals Karlsruher SC. This was the result of the draw for the games on March 1st and 2nd, which was carried out as part of the ARD “Sports Show”.

It is only the second time in the history of the cup competition since the Bundesliga was introduced that four second division teams have made it into the top eight. In 2004, for the first time, half of all eight quarter-finalists came from the House of Commons. At that time, second division team Alemannia Aachen had also reached the final in Berlin. Today’s third division club MSV Duisburg was the last second division club to reach the cup final in 2011.

HSV vs. KSC is a duel with history

Leipzig is the favorite to win the cup after numerous top clubs such as FC Bayern Munich, defending champions Borussia Dortmund, Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Mönchengladbach left the competition, meaning that the cup winners of the past 29 years are missing in the last eight. The Saxons lost the final in 2019 and 2021, against Hannover Leipzig has had an impeccable record with four wins in four competitive games.

The former Dortmund cup hero Norbert Dickel stepped in for Felix Neureuther as Losfee at short notice. The ex-ski star had to fit his daughter because of a corona infection. And Dickel gave the neighbors from Bochum another home game in the quarterfinals, which will be played on March 1st and 2nd. VfL had already knocked out FC Augsburg and FSV Mainz 05 at home.

The duel between HSV and KSC brings back memories of thrilling duels. In 2015, the Hanseatic League prevailed against Karlsruhe in a dramatic relegation. “We’re happy with the lot. It’s a feasible task. But there’s no reason to be euphoric,” said HSV team manager Bernd Wehmeyer. But KSC also has positive things in common with HSV. Baden’s last cup victory came in 1956 with a 3-1 win over HSV. The semifinals are scheduled for April 19th and 20th, before the final on May 21st in Berlin’s Olympic Stadium.
