Hartel increases Schalke’s worries

Schalke sits in the bottom of the table – and can’t work its way up against St. Pauli. The hosts’ hope of taking home at least one point at Millerntor was dashed with a brace from Hartel.

With a brace, Marcel Hartel led FC St. Pauli into the top group of the 2nd Bundesliga and increased FC Schalke 04’s worries. In the 3-1 (1-1) win against the Bundesliga relegated team, Hartel scored with a hand penalty in the 21st minute and in the 57th minute. In between, Sebastian Polter (29th) equalized. In stoppage time, Carlo Boukhalfa (90+2) scored the final goal. Thanks to their success, Hamburg, who were still unbeaten after seven match days, jumped to second place, at least until Sunday. The guests from Gelsenkirchen are 15th in the table. further deep in the basement.

FC St. Pauli started just as stormily as the previous Sunday in the 5-1 win against Holstein Kiel. Schalke barely got out of their own half. Until the break, the ball possession ratio was 63:37 percent. Hamburg’s only drawback: the exploitation of opportunities. It was only when referee Frank Willenborg decided on a hand penalty after VAR intervened that the hosts were rewarded. The cause was Schalke player Lino Tempelmann, who threw himself into a shot from Connor Metcalfe. Hartel converted safely.

Even after that, Schalke hardly took any offensive action. But with the first sensible attack, the guests made it 1-1 with Polter’s third goal of the season. The hosts needed some time to recover from the setback. But their superiority remained.

After the change, FC St. Pauli seemed to build on the first half in front of 29,546 spectators in the sold-out Millerntorstadion. But Schalke now defended itself more against Hamburg’s attack. But St. Pauli scored the goal through the outstanding Hartel. The guests didn’t give up. Yusuf Kabadayi (61st) and Polter (64th) missed the best chances. Boukhalfa then removed all doubts about FC St. Pauli’s victory.

Riot after the game

After their club’s defeat, frustrated Schalke supporters attacked stewards in the stadium. According to FC St. Pauli, four security guards were injured. So no one had to go to the hospital. A spokesman for the Hamburg club said there were bottles thrown at police officers in front of the guest area. He is also said to have arrested Schalke supporters. There was initially no statement from the police.
