Presented out of competition at the Cannes Film Festival, this excellent action film relaunched the career of Sylvester Stallone then at the bottom of the wave after several failures in the comedy register.
Cliffhanger is the story of Gabe Walker, an experienced mountaineer traumatized by the death of a friend whom he was unable to save. After abandoning his job as a high-mountain rescuer, he returned to service to help a rescue team in the Rockies after a plane crash. But it turns out that the survivors are thugs who decide to take the team hostage and use their knowledge of the area to find large sums of money…
Excellent 90s entertainment, Cliffhanger begins impressively. It’s impossible not to have been gripped by the incredible opening sequence of Renny Harlin’s film, which sees Gabe Walker (Stallone) trying to rescue his best friend’s partner, stuck at the top of a peak.
The scene, of crazy intensity, has not aged a bit. And Cliffhanger, which literally means “person hanging on the edge of the cliff”, has never lived up to its title so well as in these few minutes of unbearable suspense.
A veritable nightmare for those who are afraid of heights but a truly frightening moment for every viewer, the ultra-realistic opening scene of Cliffhanger can be seen below.
Cliffhanger, filmed in the Italian Dolomites mountain range, was a great public success with more than $255 million raked in worldwide. In France, the feature film attracted more than 2.6 million spectators.
Good news for fans of this adventure at altitude: a sequel, inspired by one of the big successes of 2022, is currently in preparation! In Cliffhanger 2, Stallone will reprise his role as Gabe Walker, who will train a new generation of climbers.
