Call for donations for family stopped by police officers

After the deadly shot at 17-year-old Nahel in a Parisian suburb, a police officer is in custody on suspicion of intentional homicide. A right-wing moderator collects donations for his family. Now the donation initiator announces to stop the action.

The controversial fundraiser for the family of the police officer who shot dead a 17-year-old during a traffic stop in France last week is to be stopped on Tuesday evening. The call for donations will “end at midnight tonight,” explained the initiator and TV commentator Jean Messiha via video in online services. Messiha is the former spokesman for far-right politician Eric Zemmour and is known for his radical views.

In the fundraiser for the police officer on the GoFundMe platform, more than 1.5 million euros had already been collected by Tuesday evening a few hours before midnight. The money is dedicated to Florian M.’s family, “who has done his job and is now paying a high price for it,” says the appeal for donations. The donation goal was 50,000 euros.

Police officer Florian M. is currently in custody on suspicion of intentional killing. Last Tuesday he shot the youth Nahel M. in the Parisian suburb of Nanterre. A video shows that the police officer shot the young man through the open side window of the car while he was trying to drive away.

After the fatal shot, there were days of violent protests in the greater Paris area and in numerous other cities in France. About 1,100 buildings and more than 200 police stations were damaged in the riots.

The call for the policeman Florian M. had triggered a lot of criticism in France. Socialist MP Arthur Delaporte and another left-wing MP had promised legal action against the fundraiser.
