Gianna Nannini – 1981

Born into a family of confectioners with a long tradition in Siena, Gianna Nannini went her own way early on. At 18, she left home to study piano and composition in Lucca and Milan. Her first LP, “California,” caused a scandal in Catholic Italy in the 1980s. The cover features the Statue of Liberty, holding a vibrator instead of a torch. The feminist content of her songs also caused provocation in her home country. Hit after hit and sold-out venues in Europe followed. The rock singer rose to become one of the most famous Italian artists. In her mid-50s, the musician became the mother of a daughter. Her late pregnancy caused plenty of discussion in the Italian media. Due to the media interest in her private life, Nannini moved to London with her partner and daughter Penelope to escape the pressure from conservative Italy.
