The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has only been in operation for a few weeks – and is sending one sensational image after the other back to earth. After the black and white photo of Jupiter in the Instagram look, there is now cosmic splendor of color to see again:
A new image from the JWST shows a rare phenomenon in space in unprecedented detail: a so-called cartwheel galaxy.
The massive space structure does not have this name for nothing: In contrast to the spiral shape of our Milky Way, the Cartwheel Galaxy consists of a ring of stars that has wrapped itself around a core of hot dust.
The shape of this galaxy, which is accompanied by two smaller galaxies, was created by a crash with another galaxy – and according to Nasa, the formation is in a process of change that the US space agency sonorously calls “star gymnastics”.
