Star Trek 4: Not just scheduling problems – Star talks about the rocky road to the new film with Chris Pine

• “Star Trek 4” is on hold – or is it? The crew is probably still hoping for a return to the Enterprise.
• Uhura star Zoe Saldana is now talking about the project’s problems and believes that these are not just of a scheduling nature.
• All of the film’s stars are busy, making it difficult to work out a shooting schedule. But how deep are the problems?

For a while, Star Trek 4 starring Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and Karl Urban was looking good. There was even a theatrical release in December 2023, but then director Matt Shakman pulled out and the film was pulled from theatrical release. What happened? Actress Zoe Saldana now talks about the problems of the new film from the “Star Trek” universe.

She plays the role of Nyota Uhura in the new “Star Trek” films and is also a very popular actress outside of “Star Trek”. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), for example, she plays Gamora from the “Guardians of the Galaxy” films. And she is not alone. Almost all the stars of the “Star Trek” films are now so in demand that it is almost impossible to create a shooting schedule.

Although all the stars from Chris Pine to Simon Pegg always emphasize their interest in returning, it is difficult to schedule. In an interview with the US magazine Deadline, Zoe Saldana now admits that she does not only assume that there will be problems with “Star Trek 4”.

We had contact with JJ [Abrams, Produzent] and looked to see if we would be able to shoot in the fall. I don’t think it was possible. I think the schedules are all very…we just didn’t manage to get the whole cast and crew together. But I think it was also due to other issues with the project. But I know we all agree and would love to get back together.

What problems the project still has (had) is of course unclear. Saldana could be related to Matt Shakman’s departure. But there could also have been script or budget issues that caused the film to be postponed indefinitely.

There is sometimes talk in the media that “Star Trek 4” with the Chris Pine crew is even completely on hold, but we do not assume that. Series such as “Star Trek: Discovery” and “Star Trek: Picard” are currently too successful.

Paramount will also want to draw on this success on the big screen. A Star Trek movie is certainly high on the priority list, especially if the Hollywood studio doesn’t want to fall behind the other studios that are building franchise after franchise (or at least trying to).

At the end of the year, the Paramount+ streaming service will start in Germany and will bring the new series “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” with it. However, Star Trek: Picard Season 3 will still be shown on Amazon Prime Video. We list you all “Star Trek” new releases!
