Star Trek Discovery ends after 65 episodes: Is a film coming now? Latest rumors!

After 65 episodes, “Star Trek: Discovery” is over. The sci-fi series started on Paramount+ in 2017. Back then, the streaming service was still called CBS All Access. After seven years, the series is coming to an end and that’s a bit surprising, because it was only announced last year that the series would end with season 5.

At that point, season 5 had already been completely filmed. Very little was added to round out the finale. Only the last episode was still being worked on. Due to the surprise cancellation, there are always rumors about a possible film that could continue the story.

Star Sonequa Martin-Green, who has played Michael Burnham in the series since the first episode, confirmed some time ago that there has been a lot of talk about the possibility of making a film that would continue the story of the USS Discovery.

It’s definitely a good sign that the “Discovery” crew is already talking about the possible film sequel. But Martin-Green also says that nothing official has been confirmed and she hasn’t heard anything from the studio yet.

Streaming film for Paramount+ instead of cinema

A long time ago, Jonathan Frakes, who is known as Riker from “Star Trek: Picard” but also as the director of numerous “Star Trek” episodes of various series, stated that series and films at Paramount are controlled by different management levels, so that it is probably difficult or even impossible to transfer the series heroes to the screen.

The only option for the crew of the USS Discovery would therefore be a film that starts streaming directly on Paramount+, such as “Star Trek: Section 31” with Michelle Yeoh. In fact, when the “exclusive film event” was announced, it was stated that Paramount+ plans to release a film event every two years.

If this plan goes through, a film about the USS Discovery would certainly not be a surprising decision, especially since the set of the spaceship already exists and such a film could therefore be produced relatively inexpensively and quickly.

That’s what the “Star Trek: Discovery” movie would be about

The finale of “Star Trek: Discovery” has a time jump of a good 30 years at the end. We see that Michael and Book (David Ajala) live together and have a son who is already taking on his first post as captain.

What happened in those probably 30 years between the main events of the series and the epilogue has never been discussed anywhere.

A film would probably be set in those 30 years. Since Paramount+ is certainly also interested in linking the individual series and streaming films, we can assume that a “Discovery” film will potentially be based on the upcoming series “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy”.

When the series (probably) starts in 2025, it will be the only one in the “Star Trek” chronology that takes place at the same time as “Star Trek: Discovery” and thus has the only chance to establish connections and set the course for a film.

Be it guest appearances by the Discovery crew or plot elements that can be introduced. But the film “Star Trek: Section 31” also has a chance of getting a “Discovery” film off the ground thanks to its connection to “Discovery”. After all, Michelle Yeoh was a leading actress in “Star Trek: Discovery” for three seasons.

Ultimately, it all depends on how “Star Trek: Section 31” is perceived. If the film is a success at Paramount+, then we can expect more stories, including about the Discovery crew. If “Section 31” is a flop, then we can probably forget about a “Discovery” film either.
