In the first two episodes of “Star Trek: Discovery” Season 5, we get to know a new character, Captain Rayner (Callum Keith Rennie), who promptly becomes Michael Burnham’s (Sonequa Martin-Green) number one after Saru (Doug Jones). the USS Discovery leaves.
Captain Rayner turns out to be tough, authoritarian and merciless, but also 100 percent sincere. Michael appoints him as her new first officer because she hopes that his completely opposite personality will enrich her and the crew. With his pointed ears, Rayner is somewhat reminiscent of the infamous Romulans, but which species does he actually belong to?

As it turns out in Star Trek: Discovery, Rayner is not a Romulan. His ears may be pointed, but they do not have the same characteristics as those of Romulans and Vulcans. They appear almost nibbled and merge into the jaw line.
Rayner is a Kellerun. This species is one that we have only seen through brief appearances in “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine”, but which has not otherwise played a role in the “Star Trek” universe.
In “Deep Space Nine” we learn that the Kellerun are fresh out of a long-running war with the T’Lani in the late 24th century. Both species want to destroy all traces of a virus that was used to end the war. This leads her to Dr. Bashir (Alexander Siddig) and Chief O’Brien (Colm Meaney), who helped stop the virus, are witnesses to this chemical weapon and are therefore supposed to be killed (episode “The Harvester Disaster”).
Like Vulcans and humans, the Kellerun are a humanoid species native to the Alpha Quadrant. As we learned from Rayner, the Kelleruns belong to the Federation in the 32nd century and therefore also to Starfleet.

Canadian actor Callum Keith Rennie is known as Cylon Leoben Conoy from Battlestar Galactica. You may also know him as John Wakefield in Harper’s Island. Rock band Billy Talent takes their name from Callum Keith Richards’ role in the film “Hard Core Logo”, in which his name is Billy Tallent.
