Don’t worry, this review is largely spoiler-free!

The fourth episode of the fifth season of “Star Trek: Discovery” starts today. So far, the final season of the sci-fi series has been able to win back at least some fans who were previously critical of the series with an exciting adventure journey through the galaxy. A special highlight awaits us with Episode 4 “The Time Spider”!

The episode follows a traditional time loop theme that we’ve seen many times in the Star Trek universe, but spices it up by not being a time loop, but a series of jumps to different points in Discovery’s timeline.

Fun, excitement and honest emotions

This not only brings back moments from previous seasons, we also learn more about the history of Discovery and the political situation in which the Federation finds itself in the 32nd century (but we don’t want to reveal any more about that at this point).

What makes this episode so powerful is that it doesn’t shy away from capitalizing on that nostalgia while also tying many of the events to other Star Trek series. A recurring reference to “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” and “The Next Century” runs through the fifth season.

By building on the rich universe that already exists, fans who have been immersed in this world for decades will finally feel seen. Before, the problem was often that the series either relied too much on these references or cooked its own soup completely independent of them.

In episode 4 “The Time Spider”, “Star Trek: Discovery” works wonderfully as its own adventure, but fits wonderfully into the overall context. In addition, the focus is on the crew members, who often only provide cues.

In this episode too, two characters are particularly in focus, Michael (Sonequa Martin-Green) and Rayner (Callum Keith Rennie), but the supporting characters still take on key roles, which finally creates a good and emotionally honest dynamic between the characters!

The next episode will be streamed on Paramount+ on April 25, 2024. The final “Star Trek: Discovery” season consists of a total of 10 episodes. The final season of “Star Trek: Lower Decks” will also start at the end of the year. We list all new “Star Trek” releases for you!
