In “Star Trek: Discovery” Season 5, Captain Rayner is the “new guy.” Will he survive until the end of the series? Actor Callum Keith Rennie gives clear clues.

In the first episode of “Star Trek: Discovery” Season 5 we meet Captain Rayner (Callum Keith Rennie). The new character is grumpy, strong-willed, but sincere at heart. Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) appreciates his direct and honest nature and therefore makes him Saru’s (Doug Jones) successor as number one aboard the USS Discovery.
His hard-to-like-but-impossible-not-to-love nature is somewhat reminiscent of Captain Shaw (Todd Stashwick) from “Star Trek: Picard” Season 3, who dies at the end. But will Rayner face a similar fate in the series finale of Star Trek: Discovery?

Discovery’s new first officer is played by Callum Keith Rennie (“Battlestar Galactica”), who talks about Captain Rayner’s future in an interview with US magazine Screen Rant. Before the series was canceled with Season 5, Captain Rayner even seemed to be slated for a potential lead role in Season 6.
I think there would have been a lot of possibilities if it had continued into another season. It was all set up in such a way that you could say, ‘Oh, let’s put this and that in.’ […] We assumed it would continue. We have [Staffel 5] not filmed as ‘this is the final season’. […] I finished the season and said, ‘Well, okay. I learned a lot. And I can’t wait to come back and do other things.’

It is no longer possible that Callum Keith Rennie will return again due to the unexpected cancellation of “Star Trek: Discovery” last year, but his statements suggest that Rayner will definitely make it to the end of the season and not die . The finale will be released on May 30, 2024 on Paramount+.
It should also be kept in mind that a new series called “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy” is being worked on, which potentially ties in with “Discovery” in the “Star Trek” timeline and thus leaves open the possibility of fan favorites from “Discovery” to bring back.
Rayner may become a lecturer at Starfleet Academy. Because of his rough nature, he’s probably not particularly popular, but his character can still develop.
The next episode will be streamed on Paramount+ on April 18, 2024. The final “Star Trek: Discovery” season consists of a total of 10 episodes. The final season of “Star Trek: Lower Decks” will also start at the end of the year. We list all new “Star Trek” releases for you!
