Dak’Reh is considered the butcher of J’Gal. He is said to have killed his own men and eventually joined the Federation. The reason for killing his own men: he didn’t approve of their orders and wanted to end the bloodshed.

In doing so, he assumes the role of a saint in the ranks of the Federation. But Dr. M’Benga knows the truth. Dak’Reh deserted and was a coward who fled when Dr. M’Benga himself slaughtered the other Klingons.

This gave Dak’Reh time to flee. Before fleeing, however, Dak’Reh gave the order to kill everyone who is not a Klingon soldier, including women and children.

Ashamed of his actions, M’Benga has never revealed that he killed the Klingon leaders while the Federation and Dak’Reh fabricated the web of lies surrounding his reputation. Pike (Anson Mount) justifies this: The Federation believes in second chances.

dr M’Benga, on the other hand, cannot understand why the federation took in a Klingon who not only had children and innocent people killed, but who was also responsible for these murders himself.

It also turns out that Dak’Reh didn’t join the Federation because he didn’t want to continue following the path of the Klingons and needed asylum. His Klingon honor was besmirched after he fled, and he was ashamed of his cowardice. However, that doesn’t mean his efforts for peace in his role as ambassador weren’t genuine. He says he’s changed.

Star Trek: Did Dr. M’Benga Dak’Reh really killed?

As the episode progresses, Dak’Reh wants some kind of friendship with Dr. Build M’Benga. If two war veterans who fought each other could pull themselves together, it would send a powerful message. When Dak’Reh is finally due to leave the Enterprise, he wants to say goodbye to M’Benga.

However, M’Benga has no great interest in a conversation or friendship and confronts him with his lies. dr M’Benga reveals that he is actually the Butcher of J’Gal. He asks Dak’Reh to leave, and the Klingon catches Dr. M’Benga on his shoulder and asks him to put the past to rest.

This touch triggers M’Benga. Through an opaque pane of glass we finally sense a conflict, hear an argument and see Dak’Reh with Dr. M’Benga’s Klingon knife from the war goes down in his chest. It looks like Dr. Killed M’Benga Dak’Reh – and that’s exactly what happened.

Chapel (Jess Bush) is able to twist it so that M’Benga was attacked by Dak’Reh. Since the murder weapon is Klingon, Dr. M’Benga for only defending himself. And while Dak’Reh was pushy and should have left when the ship’s doctor asked him to, Dr. M’Benga’s act was perhaps a little over the top. Whether it still counts as self-defense is questionable.

This becomes clear again in the final discussion with Captain Pike. dr M’Benga says he didn’t start the argument, he emphasizes that twice and it’s true, he asked Dak’Reh to leave. But dr M’Benga basically sees no difference: if he had found and killed him a few years ago when the war was still raging, it would not have been manslaughter and now there should be an investigation by the Federation?

However, the same blood is still on Dak’Reh’s hands as before, and his role as a saint is based on a tall tale. Pike reiterates that the Federation believes people can change and wants to give second chances.

dr M’Benga counters that Pike is privileged to share that view. He himself has seen and experienced too much to emulate these ideals, which for him are simply too far removed from reality.
