Depending on which sources you believe, Gene Roddenberry was either an agnostic (does not believe in any religion, but does not completely rule out the existence of a god) or an atheist (denies the existence of a god). In his vision of the future, religion was no longer necessary because science had advanced so much that religion would no longer be needed to explain things. In the “Star Trek” future, small religious traditions are more of a cultural heritage than a religion.

The “Star Trek: The Next Generation” episode “The Pact with the Devil” starts off as Christmassy as it can get. Data (Brent Spiner) is seen wearing pajamas typical of Scrooge from Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol.” He is haunted by a ghost and it quickly becomes clear that he is not only dressed like Scrooge, he is playing Scrooge in a holodeck program.
The rest of the episode is less about Christmas and the opening served more thematically as an introduction to superstition.

Basically a great Christmas tree decoration if it ever came on sale: The villain in the “The Next Century” episode “The Right to Life” is a giant snowflake. Does more need to be said here?
The massive snowflake is an alien creature that invades a colony, which doesn’t seem quite as Christmassy as the glittery exterior. The crew of the USS Enterprise-D ultimately has to try to communicate with the creature and defuse the situation.
