In “Star Trek: Picard,” the crew from “Star Trek: The Next Generation” comes together once again to save the galaxy. Picard (Patrick Stewart), Riker (Jonathan Frakes) and Co. are already well into their years at this point. In plain English: You are old!

But being around 60 years old and still serving Starfleet is nothing new in the Star Trek universe and the future it depicts. Kirk (William Shatner) and his crew also went on adventures in old age. But how old will people actually be in the future?

In “Star Trek” people live to be a good 120 years old!

In “Star Trek: Picard” Season 1, Jean-Luc Picard is already 94 years old. The series takes place in the “Star Trek” chronology towards the end of the 24th century. Picard is seriously ill and his mind is finally loaded into an android body. Picard himself says that he would have liked to have had another 10 to 20 years with his own body.

This brings us to an approximate age of 115 years, which fits in well with the fact that life expectancy is around 120 years. Picard himself only retired at the age of 80 – and even involuntarily. If he hadn’t fallen out with Starfleet, he would probably have stayed in the service longer.

Who is the oldest person in “Star Trek”?

The oldest person to ever appear in the Star Trek universe is Dr. Leonard “Pill” McCoy. In the premiere double episode of “The Next Century,” actor DeForrest Kelley makes a guest appearance as a pill and is barely recognizable under a lot of makeup. Pille was 137 years old at the time.

DeForrest Kelley isn’t the only one making a cameo appearance in The Next Generation. James Doohan is also back in the episode “Visit from the Old Enterprise” and plays Montgomery “Scotty” Scott again. Scotty is technically 147 years old when he appears, but he was trapped in a transport model buffer for 75 years, so those years must be subtracted from his age.

William Shatner also meets Picard’s crew as James T. Kirk and is technically already 138 years old at the time of his death in “Star Trek: Meeting of the Generations”, i.e. one year older than Pille. However, like Scotty, Kirk has been detached from time and space for a very long time. He’s been stuck in a temporal nexus for 78 years, so that number also has to be subtracted from his actual age.

While Pille remains the oldest known human “Star Trek” character, we should not forget that there are also many other species in “Star Trek” that can live significantly longer than humans. These include, for example, the Vulcans. Spock (Leonard Nimoy) is 161 years old.
