“Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” put an end to an annoying trend of the modern “Star Trek” era. Popular for decades, the sci-fi franchise has spawned many distinctive Star Trek villains that return regularly, from the Klingons to Harry Mudd to Q. However, the new Star Trek series and -Movies seem to absolutely go under on this front.

Neither JJ Abrams’ films, nor “Star Trek: Discovery” or “Star Trek: Picard” created villains who had the potential to return regularly. If the potential was there, they usually died. But with Captain Angel (Jesse James Keitel), “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” broke this trend.

Keitel plays a charming, cunning and sly person. Keitel shows a lot of charisma, making Captain Angel a villain that is impossible for fans to hate. Captain Angel’s existence as a space pirate also has a certain cult factor.

The key to the role’s success, however, is the badass and unrelenting manner in which Captain Angel successfully took over the USS Enterprise on the first attempt. Also the twist that Captain Angel first identified himself as Dr. Aspen poses and wins the hearts of the crew with an intelligent and sensitive manner will long be remembered by fans of the “Star Trek” universe.

At the end of the seventh episode, Captain Angel is able to escape and the series makes a kind of promise that fans can look forward to seeing them again. And hardly anyone would complain about it – on the contrary!

The joy of a charismatic villain who is a lot of fun for the viewers is fueled even further by the fact that Captain Angel, as the partner of Spock’s half-brother Sybok, has a special connection to Spock (Ethan Peck).

So the exchange of blows between the Enterprise crew and Captain Angel has a certain personal closeness, so that the potential of a Q-Picard relationship lies hidden here. We can’t wait to see what else Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will bring to Captain Angel.
