It’s a golden age for Star Trek fans. Enterprise darling Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) has returned for his spin-off Star Trek: Picard, and Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) is back in Star Trek: Prodigy .

Both climb the career ladder at Starfleet relatively parallel, but who actually has the higher rank?

Janeway vs. Picard: Who Has the Higher Rank?

Already in “Star Trek: Nemesis”, when Picard still holds the rank of captain, Janeway appears as an admiral. Only shortly after the events of “Voyager” did she receive and accept a promotion. Picard did not accept promotion to the rank of admiral until a few years after “Nemesis”.

Janeway has followed her career much more intensively than Picard and is a few years ahead of him. Afterward, Janeway remains with Starfleet and is influential at the time of Star Trek: Picard Season 3, leading Picard and Seven (Jeri Ryan) to consider enlisting her help.

Picard, meanwhile, had a dispute with Starfleet and, as we learn in Season 1 of Star Trek: Picard, retired for an extended period before returning to an active duty in Starfleet until Season 2. During this period, Picard has lost influence and relevance.

Janeway, on the other hand, as we learn in Star Trek: Prodigy, has continued to gain influence over time, definitely making her more of an influence in Starfleet by the end of Picard Season 3. Picard still enjoys a very high reputation and is considered one of the best captains Starfleet has ever had.

Only as an admiral did he just let his career slide a bit. This makes Janeway the most successful Starfleet captain of the three TNG era captains. The TNG era (TNG= The Next Generation) includes “The Next Century”, “Voyager”, “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine”, “Prodigy”, “Star Trek: Lower Decks” and “Star Trek: Picard” .

Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks) is the Captain of the station Deep Space Nine and also has a very impressive career. However, at the end of “DS9” he becomes a prophet and thus an oversized being. His career in Starfleet was over.
