In the season 3 premiere episode of “Star Trek: Picard,” Raffi (Michelle Hurd) is on a mission for Starfleet Intelligence. She investigates undercover on the planet M’Talas Prime and goes to realms she knows from her past. She has a difficult past with substance abuse, which even led to her breaking up with her son, Gabe (Mason Gooding).
In the first season of “Star Trek: Picard” we learn that Raffi, together with Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart), drove the evacuation of Romulus to save the Romulans from the supernova. When this venture didn’t go well and Picard left Starfleet, she did the same and fell into a hole full of drugs and alcohol.
In the period between the Romulus evacuation and the first “Star Trek: Picard” season, she became estranged from her son, whom she injured under the influence of intoxicants, psychologically, whether physical violence was also involved is not implied. Gabe eventually decides to cut ties.
In the first season, Raffi tries to get back in touch, but the scars are too deep and Gabe doesn’t want to have reconciliation with his mother, even if she has given up drugs. Raffi also learns that Gabe is married to a Romulan and is expecting a child.
Now, in Star Trek: Picard Season 3, we see Raffi looking at a hologram of her granddaughter. So it’s been a few years in the “Star Trek” chronology that Raffi is now a grandmother. However, she never saw her granddaughter. At least we don’t know anything about it.
