“Star Trek: Picard” season 2 should serve as a redemption for Jean-Luc. In addition, showrunner Akiva Goldsman reveals why the time travel story is not just to be understood literally.

- In Star Trek: Picard Season 2 we travel back in time. Not just literally, but also in a psychological sense.
- Co-showrunner Akiva Goldsman reveals we’re learning more about Picard’s drive and motivations.
- While season 1 can be described as “resurrection”, Goldsman describes season 2 as “redemption”.
The start of “Star Trek: Picard” Season 2 is imminent and the first pictures and trailers give hope for a glorious return from Sir Patrick Stewart. There is also initial information about the plot and comments from the series creators. While a love story for Picard was recently discussed, co-showrunner Akiva Goldsman is now delving into some of the new season’s topics.
The series creator describes the story arc of the second season of “Star Trek: Picard” as “redemption”. The first season, on the other hand, he would describe as “resurrection”. The new episodes aim to delve deeper into Picard’s (Stewart) psyche and what drives the Starfleet admiral.
I think we’re digging deeper, but backwards, and what I mean by that is that we’re going back in time, both literally and in spirit, [wir tauchen] in [Picards] Psyche off, it’s a look in, a look back.
Co-Showrunner Akiva Goldsman
In an interview with the US magazine ComicBook.com, Goldsman indicates that Jean-Luc is rethinking his own decisions and the paths he has taken. This tells us what drove him back then and what made him the man we know today.
Thinking about paths taken and decisions fits particularly well into the plot, because rogue Q (John de Lancie) is also back in the game and presents Picard with new challenges. More specifically, he changes a decision made in the 21st century so that it affects Picard’s life in the 24th century.
Fans are over the moon! Star Trek: Discovery Season 4 will be released alongside Star Trek: Picard Season 2. Do the actions merge? Many now suspect that the reason for the parallel release is a Discovery-Picard crossover!
Symbolically, Q Picard thus shows the power of individual decisions over oneself and the lives of others. A plot that sounds promising on a meta level but also on an entertainment level.
Goldsman already hints that Q fans will enjoy the new season: “On many levels it is a sequel in spirit to some and every Q episode.”
The younger fans of the “Star Trek” universe may not know Q yet. Picard and Q have a long history together, which was explored in Starship Enterprise: The Next Century. We tell you everything you need to know about Q!
