Star Trek Picard: Why was the “Project Khan” cliffhanger ignored in season three?

STAR TREK: PICARD

In Star Trek: Picard season 3, the second season’s “Project Khan” cliffhanger was not further explored. Had the hint with Dr. Adam Soong (Brent Spiner) any purpose at all?

  • At the end of Star Trek: Picard Season 2, Project Khan was mentioned but not revisited.
  • The fact that the cliffhanger no longer plays a role in season 3 is annoying. But will Project Khan be picked up again?
  • After “Star Trek: Picard” season 3, other series and films from Paramount+ are ideal for filming the story.

“Star Trek: Picard” Season 3 became a huge hit for Paramount+. After the rather mixed first seasons, the finale has developed into a big event for “Star Trek” fans. So the season didn’t do too much wrong, but one thing bothers us deeply: Project Khan.

At the end of the second season of Star Trek: Picard, an angry Dr. Adam Soong (Brent Spiner) returns in the 21st century. Defeated and frustrated. He digs a file out of a drawer: Project Khan. The scene suggests that Soong was involved in the creation of the biogenetically enhanced superhuman Khan Noonien Singh (Ricardo Montalbán).

Star Trek: Who is Khan?

Khan lived in the 20th century and was able to conquer large parts of the world through his superpowers, which he received through experiments. In the mid-1990s he had to flee into exile.

Along with other genetically enhanced humans, he froze himself aboard the SS Botany Bay to survive longer and shot himself into space. In the 23rd century, Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) has found the SS Botany Bay and awakened Khan from his sleep.

Star Trek: What Role Did Dr. Soong at Khan’s creation?

The cliffhanger in Star Trek: Picard season 2 clearly indicates that Dr. Soong was among the scientists who experimented on Khan Noonien Singh in the 20th century, giving him his superpowers. Exactly which part Soong played is not disclosed.

It’s also unclear why Soong digs out the file at the end of season two. If he still has big plans with the “achievements” from Project Khan, we haven’t seen them yet. There was no room for that in Season 3 of Star Trek: Picard. But was the scene just in there?

Star Trek: Project Khan could still become important in these series & films!

We don’t think Project Khan was brought in just like that. That wouldn’t make any sense. While the cliffhanger in Star Trek: Picard Season 3 hasn’t been resolved, we think Adam Soong’s character and Khan’s origin story will still matter.

“Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan” director Nicholas Meyer has wanted to shoot a Khan series for years, which will probably now become a podcast. Also, Paramount+ could make a film about Project Khan. The streaming service is rumored to release a new film every two years after “Star Trek: Section 31”.

So it would be nice if the story got a good ending. The project could also be taken up in “Section 31” itself. The secret organization SECTION 31 has always had a great interest in augments (biogenetically enhanced humans).

But other productions like “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” could also pick it up. After all, protagonist La’an Noonien Singh (Christina Chong) is a descendant of Khan. Showrunner Akiva Goldsman has already hinted that the connection between Khan and La’an will still play a role. We list you all “Star Trek” new releases!
