Star Trek Section 31: Release on Paramount+
An official start date for “Star Trek: Section 31” has not yet been announced. Filming started at the end of January 2024, so a release in winter 2024 cannot be ruled out. However, it is more likely that it will start in spring or summer 2025. “Section 31” will be produced exclusively for the streaming service Paramount+ and will therefore not be released in cinemas.

Plot of “Star Trek: Section 31”
The new “Star Trek” series is about Section 31, the secret branch of Starfleet. Off-the-books missions are carried out in the shadows, essentially Starfleet’s dirty work. At the center is Philippa Georgiou, who joined the organization in “Star Trek: Discovery” Season 2.
It is unclear whether the film will follow this directly. At the end of the second season of “Star Trek: Discovery”, Georgiou traveled to the 32nd century, 900 years into the future, only to be sent back in time through a portal at the end of the third season. It is unclear what time she was sent to. Executive producer Alex Kurtzman has already revealed that many fan theories are far removed from the actual plot.

“Star Trek: Section 31”: Cast
The main role of “Section 31” logically stars Michelle Yeoh as Phillipa Georgiou. Viewers of “Star Trek: Discovery” know that the character is a person from the Mirror Universe. This means that the Georgiou of the series is very self-centered, brutal and Darwinian.
At Yeoh’s side are Omari Hardwick (“Power”), Kacey Rohl (“Hannibal”), Sam Richardson (“Ted Lasso”, “Veep”), Sven Ruygrok (“One Piece”), Robert Kazinsky (“EastEnders”), Humberly Gonzalez (“Ginny & Georgia”) and James Hiroyuki Liao (“Barry”) can be seen.
What roles they play is still unknown. It has also not yet been revealed whether other fan favorites such as Shazad Latif from “Star Trek: Discovery” will return in his role as Ash Tyler. As a former Klingon in human body, he certainly has the necessary level of cold brutality to work in the secret organization. If the series follows “Discovery,” a crossover with “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” would be conceivable.
But there have also been rumors for a long time that Alexander Siddig could return from “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine”. This would suggest that “Section 31” would not be set in the 23rd century, but in the late 24th or early 25th century. If this is the case, one could hope for appearances by the stars of “Star Trek: Picard”.

Star Trek: Discovery director Olatunde Osunsanmi will direct. The screenplay is by Craig Sweeny. Alex Kurtzman, Sweeny, Aaron Baiers, Osunsanmi, Frank Siracusa, John Weber, Rod Roddenberry, Trevor Roth and Michelle Yeoh serve as executive producers on “Star Trek: Section 31.” Filming started at the end of January 2024.

It’s nice that Michelle Yeoh is returning to the “Star Trek” universe again. Since “Star Trek: Discovery” ends next year, it also makes sense that there will be a spin-off film, but of course the following question remains: How can “Section 31” fit meaningfully into the overall context of “Star Trek”? universe to be incorporated? Because of its very nature, the film cannot stand alone as a continuation of the story of an already established character.
