- In the new “Star Trek” series “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds”, Pike represents a counterpart to the classic male stereotype.
- Although Pike is the captain, he doesn’t need to show off, on the contrary: he cares a lot about his crew.
- Instead of keeping his feelings to himself, he wears his heart on his sleeve, going against the image that showing emotions in men is a weakness.
Anson Mount has quickly become a fan favorite as Captain Christopher Pike in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. But he already managed to do this in “Star Trek: Discovery”. It’s easy to see why: Pike breaks with the classic image of masculinity and leadership positions.
From Pike’s first appearance in “Star Trek: Discovery” it quickly becomes clear that this man doesn’t have a big ego, if he has one at all. He comes aboard the spaceship Discovery and is to take command. But instead of showing off his position as captain, he involves the entire crew in decisions.
Pike values friendly interaction, trust and loyalty. He does not mark the fat Max and therefore ensures a pleasant working environment. In addition, Pike wears his heart on his sleeve. He tells both Spock (Ethan Peck) and Una (Rebecca Romijn) about the vision about his tragic future and his feelings.
Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) – as an example of another captain of the “Star Trek” universe – prefers to keep his feelings to himself. This is an issue that is often raised in society, that men feel that they are not allowed to show their feelings openly. It’s not uncommonly seen as a weakness.
Pike doesn’t care! He likes to share feelings with his fellow human beings, but above all his hope, his optimism and deals openly with problems. However, he does not show negative emotions such as aggression. Instead, he relies on diplomacy, listens to other parties, and respects cultural and social differences without frantically imposing his own ideologies.
It was also noticed in the first episodes of “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” that Pike can take a step back and doesn’t always have to be the center of attention. This would not have occurred to a Captain Kirk (William Shatner).
It’s Pike’s exuberance, his empathetic approach to his crew and the fact that he doesn’t care much about his rank as captain, what makes him special and lovable. Even when he’s not aboard his spaceship, he has enough faith in Una to command the ship.
He doesn’t ask her how things are going on board the Enterprise, he just knows because he has faith and doesn’t need to brag about his leadership position.
