Star Trek Strange New Worlds: Wait a minute – does Michael Burnham know about Spock’s half-brother, Sybok?

Warning, spoilers follow for the seventh episode of “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds”. If you want to see the new episode in advance, we’ll help you: This is how you see “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” in Germany!

  • In the “Star Trek” universe, Spock has an adopted sister, Michael Burnham, and a half-brother, Sybok.
  • The “Star Trek” series does not show a meeting between Michael and Sybok, but does Michael know about him?
  • In “Star Trek: Discovery” it is shown that Sybok’s father, Sarek, has a very close relationship with Michael.

In “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” Episode 7, the USS Enterprise was taken over by Captain Angel (Jesse James Keitel) and her space pirates. The plan was to free a Vulcan named Xaverius from the Vulcan rehabilitation center Ankeshtan K’Til.

At the end of the episode, Xaverius is revealed to be Spock’s (Ethan Peck) half-brother, Sybok. The “Star Trek” villain is already known to most fans from “Star Trek V – At the Edge of the Universe”. Spock’s half-brother is 13 years older than Spock. Star Trek: Discovery also introduces Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) as Spock’s adoptive sister.

So we ask ourselves: does Michael Burnham know about Sybok? “Star Trek: Discovery” portrays the relationship between Michael and Spock as very close. However, the two grow up without another sibling.

In the “Star Trek” universe, it is canon that Sybok and Spock were raised as brothers, implying that Sybok was probably gone before Michael was adopted, so Michael probably never met him.

Still, we can assume she knew about Sybok. Michael had a good relationship with her adoptive father Sarek (James Frain) and from this we can deduce that he told her about his firstborn.

Since the season 2 finale, Michael has been in the future anyway, in the 32nd century. Around 900 years after the events of “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds”, “Starship Enterprise” and the “Star Trek” films. So she can read everything that happened to her brother in the “history books”.

If, contrary to expectations, Sarek did not tell her anything about Sybok, she will certainly have found out about him at the latest through the historical documentation.

“Star Trek: Discovery” season 5 is expected to start in spring 2023. “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” is currently being released. We’ll tell you how you can see “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” in Germany. The series doesn’t officially start in this country until the end of the year, when Paramount+ expands to Germany and has numerous new “Star Trek” releases in its luggage.
