Star Trek Strange New Worlds: Was Scotty Announced In Season 2 Finale?

STAR TREK: STRANGE NEW WORLDS

In the finale for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, there was a clear indication that Scotty Hemmer would inherit as chief engineer in season 2. Can this be?

Warning, this article contains spoilers for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 1!

  • Scotty was featured in the Season 1 finale of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Does that mean we will see him in season 2 too?
  • In the ninth episode, Chief Engineer Hemmer died, leaving Captain Pike to fill the post in Season 2.
  • Seven years after the first season of SNW, Scotty is on the Enterprise under Kirk as chief engineer. What he did before that is unknown.

“Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” brings back many well-known characters from “Starship Enterprise” and reinterprets them. Including Spock (Ethan Peck), Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding) and James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley). For “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” Season 2, the naval engineer Montgomery “Scotty” Scott could now also appear in the series.

The key clue comes from a brief scene in the season one finale in which Spock attempts to repair parts of the spaceship. He speaks to the chief engineer, who is not seen. He doesn’t have to be, because the voice and the Scottish accent already give away that it’s Scotty.

The scene just described takes place in the future of an alternate timeline where Kirk never took command of the USS Enterprise. Instead, Pike has retained command. Whether Kirk or not, the scene confirms: Scotty serves on the Enterprise, also under Pike.

Since the previous chief engineer, Hemmer (Bruce Horak), died in the ninth episode, the post is vacant and fans had already suspected that Scotty would start as the new chief engineer. (It should be noted that “Star Trek” takes place seven years after “Strange New Worlds” in the “Star Trek” chronology.)

It is not known in the official “Star Trek” canon if Scotty also served as an engineer on the Enterprise prior to Kirk’s era. The series could now confirm it once and for all with season 2, especially since the role was hinted at by the scene just described.

It may well be possible that Scotty will serve aboard the Enterprise as a junior engineer. There is a book, no longer part of the official canon, in which Scotty serves as a junior engineer under Pike. His senior chief engineer there is Caitlin Barry. For Season 2, Carol Kane has been confirmed as Pelia’s new chief engineer. Maybe she was inspired by Barry.

A possible actor for Scotty is not yet known. James Doohan made the role famous in the 1960s. The voice in the finale of “Strange New Worlds” comes from Matthew Wolf, who is better known as a voice actor and therefore probably served as a placeholder before the official cast is announced.
