In “Star Trek: Discovery” Season 5, powerful “Deep Space Nine” villains appear to be becoming the main villain. This is what you need to know about the Breen!
Attention, there are spoilers for the fourth episode of “Star Trek: Discovery” Season 5 “The Time Spider”!
In the latest “Star Trek: Discovery” episode, a time spider sneaks into Discovery’s engine room and causes the spaceship to jump back and forth between different points in the “Star Trek” timeline. From the past to the future and back!
One of the most important moments is undoubtedly the dystopian future in which the Breen have destroyed the Federation. This suggests that there will be a confrontation with the aliens, which “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” fans already know, in “Star Trek: Discovery” season 5.
A Breen attack on the Federation is imminent
In this time jump we find ourselves around 30 years in the future of “Star Trek: Discovery” Season 5. The USS Discovery is abandoned and the Federation headquarters is in ruins. It turns out that the weapon the USS Discovery is looking for in Season 5 has fallen into the wrong hands.
Michael realizes that next to the rubble there is an intact spaceship: the Breen. These powerful aliens were introduced in “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” and were also mentioned in “Discovery” when T’Rina (Tara Rosling) mentions that the Breen have no alliance with the Federation and are considered a potential party Moll (Eve Harlow) and L’ak (Elias Toufexis) may have been hired to find the Progenitors’ technology.
The Breen were introduced in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine as extremely powerful beings capable of taking on an entire armada of Starfleet starships at once. The Breen are not allies of Starfleet in the 32nd century either.
That they are responsible for the destruction of Starfleet and the Federation in this alternate future suggests that they will become important as the season progresses.
Are the Breen also looking for Progenitor technology?
The Discovery, as well as Moll and L’ak, are searching for a technology capable of creating life. It is particularly important to the Federation that Discovery finds this technology before Moll and L’ak and their as-yet-unrevealed clients. In the wrong hands, the technology could become a dangerous weapon.
The fact that T’Rina mentions the Breen in a previous episode suggests that the Breen and the Federation are still not allies, even more than 700 years after the Dominion War. There is probably no war going on, but the relationship seems to be strained.
Already in “Deep Space Nine” the Breen were considered a species that should not be turned away from. Little is known about them, except that their technology is highly developed and they are also very well equipped with weapons.
The next episode awaits us on April 25, 2024 on Paramount+ in the stream. There is a new episode every Thursday at 9 a.m. “Star Trek: Discovery” Season 5 is the final season, which consists of a total of 10 episodes. After the series finale, other new “Star Trek” releases await us!
