STAR TREK: STRANGE NEW WORLDS

According to William Shatner, the new “Star Trek” series would make “Star Trek” creator Gene Roddenberry turn in his grave. But is that so? And does that even matter?

  • Would Gene Roddenberry roll in his grave with the new “Star Trek” series? William Shatner claims so.
  • Looking at the “Star Trek” history, however, it shouldn’t matter whether Roddenberry would like the new series.
  • Roddenberry himself had serious problems with “Starship Enterprise – The Next Century” and William Shatner’s “Star Trek V”.

With “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” the “Star Trek” universe seems to have found its way back to Gene Roddenberry’s vision. The other new “Star Trek” series such as “Star Trek: Discovery” and “Star Trek: Picard” had split the fan base – quite a few are of the opinion that Gene Roddenberry would not like the series, including William Shatner.

The Kirk actor recently commented on “NuTrek,” claiming that some of the shows make Gene Roddenberry turn in his grave. This has empowered some fans and offended some “Star Trek” stars. But regardless of whether Roddenberry would like the new series, does that even matter?

As a “Star Trek” creator, Roddenberry is of course extremely important to many fans, us and the whole universe. But even after Roddenberry, his creation has grown and evolved. It’s unfair to limit “Star Trek” to Roddenberry these days.

So many great artists have left their mark on the Star Trek universe, from actors to writers to directors. “Star Trek” is more than just Gene Roddenberry! You can compare it to a child who moves out and develops independently, but still carries the DNA that comes from the parents.

Star Trek: That was Gene Roddenberry’s vision

Of course, Gene Roddenberry was heavily involved in “Spaceship Enterprise”, but he was more involved in the films in an advisory capacity and as a producer. He then worked actively on the first season and the development of “Spaceship Enterprise – The Next Century”, but then had to resign for health reasons.

The “Star Trek” creator wanted to create a utopia. In his vision of the future there is no more money, no religion, no social and societal injustice! It is a vision of equality, tolerance, acceptance and inclusion.

And let’s be honest, this vision is also found in the latest “Star Trek” series. Everything that goes beyond that has been going beyond that since the second season of “The Next Century”. He was very unhappy that Picard, Troi and Co. suddenly had to deal with personal problems.

Even discord and wars did not fit into his vision of a future. No wonder that Gene Roddenberry’s son Rod also has his problems with “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine”, because the series is set in a war scenario. Nevertheless, he feels the series as “Star Trek”.

In an interview with the US magazine Looper, Rod Roddenberry explains: “I think it is ‘Star Trek’ because all that ends up making us look at things from a different perspective is ‘Star Trek’ how it does things right.”

Speaking to Screen Rant, Rod Roddenberry even says he thinks his dad is proud of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

At the end of the day, Star Trek is a legacy that grows with the times and adapts to the zeitgeist. The core values are still there. It remains to be seen whether Gene Roddenberry would approve all of the new projects. It doesn’t matter though, as Roddenberry himself would certainly be proud to have inspired so many creative minds.

In the near future we can expect many more “Star Trek” releases from “Star Trek: Picard” season 3 to “Star Trek: Discovery” season 5. “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” season 2 is also confirmed. In this country we are still waiting for season 1, but there is a trick to see “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” now!
