After The Book of Boba Fett, a slew of Star Wars projects are expected. We take stock of the next films and the next series confirmed, in development or on hold.
What will the Star Wars franchise look like with Disney in the next few years? If on the side of the series on the Disney + platform the machine is rather well installed, the future is a little more obscure on the big screen.
However, it is not the projects that are lacking. With all the announcements, orders, cancellations and artistic discrepancies, it can sometimes be difficult to navigate the slew of Star Wars projects. We take stock.
The next Star Wars series
- Obi-Wan Kenobi (May 25, 2022)
Expected on Disney+ at the end of May, Obi-Wan Kenobi is the next Star Wars series to discover on Disney+. The reunion between the Jedi Master played by Ewan McGregor and his former Padawan become Darth Vader (Hayden Christensen) will spark in this mini-series directed by Deborah Chow.
Already renewed for a season 2 according to Stellan Skarsgård (in the cast), Andor is centered on the character of Diego Luna, a figure of the rebellion introduced in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Ties to Obi-Wan Kenobi are surely to be expected given that both series are set in the same timeline.
- The Bad Batch season 2 (current 2022)
Season 2 of The Bad Batch animated series, which follows The Clone Wars, will tell the continuation of the adventures of the Clone Force 99 squad, made up of genetically modified clones who have not been impacted by the effects of the chip inhibitor when Order 66 has been executed.
- The Mandalorian season 3 (December 2022?)
They found themselves in The Book of Boba Fett: Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and Grogu will team up again in season 3 of The Mandalorian, a great success on Disney+. According to information from Matt Webb Mitovich, editor of TV Lineyou will have to be patient to discover these new episodes: “It’s a safe bet that season 3 will be released this year, probably around Christmas.”
Coming to say hello in The Book of Boba Fett after her live-action introduction in season 2 of The Mandalorian, Ahsoka Tano (Rosario Dawson) will be entitled to her own series. Currently in preproduction with filming scheduled for April-May 2022, Ahsoka will therefore give pride of place to Anakin Skywalker’s former Padawan and should see her face a major enemy, Grand Admiral Thrawn, but also another villain embodied by Ray Stevenson, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
In development by director Leslye Headland (Russian Doll), who serves as showrunner, Star Wars: The Acolyte will center on female characters, according to variety. Set in a period never told before, the series will explore the rise of the dark side at the end of the High Republic era before the events of The Phantom Menace.
Headed by Justin Simien (Dear White People), Lando will be dedicated to Lando Calrissian, Han Solo’s old friend. For the moment, we still do not know who will play the character, Billy Dee Williams, Donald Glover or any other actor.
Announced during Disney Investor Day in 2020, Star Wars: A Droid Story is an animated adventure available on Disney+ and centered on a brand new hero who will still be accompanied in his adventures by the famous droids R2-D2 and C-3PO.
It’s not yet known if Anthony Daniels will reprise his cult role as the protocol droid, but a photo of him posted on his Instagram account end of January suggests that this will be the case. Sources are conflicting on whether A Droid Story will be a series or a movie.
The next movies
Initially scheduled for December 20, 2023, Rogue Squadron by Patty Jenkins is currently on stand-by. If conflicts of schedule have been put forward – the director being busy with Wonder Woman 3 – rumors, reported by a former journalist for The Hollywood Reporter, suggest that artistic differences are at play. This first Star Wars film to be directed by a woman must introduce a whole new generation of starfighter pilots.
- Star Wars movie by Taika Waititi
Taika Waititi strongly supports him: he has a script for his Star Wars film announced in 2020. He reaffirmed it at Wired in 2021: “We have a story. I’m very excited because it looks a lot like me.” If the director of Thor 3 and 4 has a script with his co-screenwriter Krysty Wilson-Cairns (1917, Last Night in Soho), it still needs to be transformed into a proper script. Taika Waititi being very busy, Star Wars fans will have to be patient.
- Star Wars movie by Kevin Feige
Kevin Feige, the big boss of the MCU, is also a Star Wars fan and he will have the opportunity to prove it since Lucasfilm and Disney trust him for a film on the saga. No information has been revealed at this time about the plot, except that Han Solo won’t be there and that Michael Waldron, screenwriter of Loki and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, was chosen to write the screenplay according to Deadline.
- JD Dillard’s Star Wars Movie
Radio silence on this Star Wars movie from JD Dillard announced in 2020, but it seems that it is still in development, although no information has leaked on the plot, which should be written by screenwriter Matt Owens (Marvel’s Luke Cage).
A brand new trilogy centered on a new Jedi order would be in the pipes at Disney and Lucasfilm., according to Joanna Robinson, former journalist for Vanity Fair. Located after the postlogy, this new trilogy will surely appear Rey (Daisy Ridley), Finn (John Boyega) or Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac).
But nothing is less certain and the journalist made a point of specifying in her podcast The Ringer Verse that this information had to be taken with a grain of salt: “You can fill an entire stadium with the ideas that Lucasfilm was interested in and never realized.”
Projects on hold
- Rangers of The New Republic
Cara Dune was supposed to be the main character of Rangers of the New Republic but her interpreter Gina Carano was fired by Disney and Lucasfilm following her controversial remarks. For the moment, the Rangers of the New Republic project is on hold even if rumors suggest that the series could become a spin-off on Bo-Katan (Katee Sackhoff) according to The Hashtag Show.
- The Rian Johnson Trilogy
Yet criticized for The Last Jedi, Rian Johson had to return to the Star Wars universe to concoct his own trilogy with his vision. But it would seem that the director has abandoned the idea like DB Weiss and David Benioff (Game of Thrones) before him, according to the indiscretions of journalist Matthew Belloni in his Puck newsletter :
“It happened to the guys from Game of Thrones. They were hired to create a new trilogy but they jumped ship. It also happened to Rian Johnson whose trilogy project was scrapped.”
