Star Wars: an unsolved mystery in the original trilogy

You can find absolutely everything about Star Wars. Like “The Empire Strikes Door”, a documentary evoking the little story behind the head-banging Stormtrooper in Episode IV. Why ? Because no less than 3 actors claim this role!

Lucasfilm Ltd.

If you are a Star Wars fan, you must know this anecdote; perhaps the most memorable blunder of the saga. This is found in A New Hope, when a squad of stormtroopers tries to track down Luke, Han, and Obi-Wan on the Death Star.

At the time of passing under an airlock, the stormtrooper on the right collides with the frame of the door. The actor who interpreted it, Laurie Goode, convinced of being offscreen at the time of the impact, was also surprised to discover in theaters that his clumsiness had been retained in the final version of the film, and was even explained to Hollywood Reporter, in 2017.

The sequence in question, below…

“On the second day of filming, I started having stomach aches. By mid-morning, I had made three or four trips to the bathroom. After getting dressed and turning around on set, I felt the need to rush to the men’s room, but was placed in [le] plan.

Around take four, as I was hanging out, I felt my stomach growl and “bang”, I hit my head! Since I wasn’t moving too fast, it was more of a light hit, so it didn’t hurt, but since no one yelled “cut”, I figured the shot wasn’t wide enough for I’m in the frame” he said.

And to continue the story: “I remember after the first two takes we were told to hold our guns in the left hand rather than the right hand. So I think the headbutt happened on the fourth take – whatever be the number of takes we did, the headbutt happened on the last take.”

Case closed ? Not quite apparently. A Youtuber named Jamie Stangroom found a way to make a 40-minute documentary around the subject, broadcast on his channel in 2019. Its title? The Empire Strikes Door. For what reason exactly? In fact, three actors have claimed to be the stormtrooper in question over the years, such as Michael Leader.

If the latter declined the interview request during the development of the documentary (and died in 2016), Laurie Goode and a certain Martyn Reid agreed to appear in it, and even to pass a lie detector test… also finds the indescribable big geek in front of the eternal, Kevin Smith, who also goes there with his little theory, as well as, more surprisingly, Gary Kurtz, the historic producer of Star Wars, explaining that if they had kept this sequence, that’s because it was actually the best take they had at the time.

The thing is, none of the crew interviewed by Jamie Stangroom actually remember the name of the actor behind the infamous Stormtrooper! Anyway, manage to embroider around such a subject for 40 min, hats off!

Below, The Empire Strikes Door, unfortunately reserved for the most English-speaking among you. If you want to see Kurtz’s words directly, it’s from 30 min..
