  • The new Star Wars series “Andor” starts on September 21, 2022 at Disney +.
  • Fiona Shaw shares what her character Maarva Andor’s relationship is like with her adopted son, Cassian Andor.
  • Cassian appreciates his mother, but has never really accepted her.

Actress Fiona Shaw opens up about her character Maarva Andor’s relationship with protagonist Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) in the upcoming Disney+ series Andor. Shaw plays Cassian’s adoptive mother, who raised the boy after his father’s death.

Andor tells the prequel to the 2016 film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. The action takes place 5 years before the events of “Rogue One” and shows how Cassian joins the rebels as a spy.

Due to the small jump in time of a few years, we will see numerous characters known from the film again in the series. But new characters are also introduced into the Star Wars universe. One of them is Cassian’s adoptive mother Maarva Andor (Fiona Shaw).

Apart from the relationship to Cassian himself, however, little has been published about Maarva. In an interview with the US magazine “Screen Rant”, actress Fiona Shaw gave a little insight into how her character will be presented in the series.

Maarva lived a very wild life and then found a boy who she took home with her. Cassian was never fully committed to being Maarva’s son as he is still searching for his sister. While he’s grateful to have a mother, Maarva is part of his problem. This is exactly what bothers Maarva, because she no longer has any influence on Cassian.

Fiona Shaw to Screen Rant

In “Rogue One”, Cassian was a devoted member of the Rebellion. According to actress Fiona Shaw, the character of the rebel spy doesn’t appear to be all that different from the ones we’ve already seen in the film.

It seems that the aloof Cassian can’t fully trust his mother and doesn’t want to try to tear down the wall between the two family members. In contrast, Maarva seeks closeness to her son. She sees the growing distance between herself and her child as a major problem that she wants to eliminate.

We will find out how the relationship between mother and son develops in the first season of “Andor” at the premiere on September 21, 2022 on Disney +. Lucasfilm announced in 2018 that it was planning a series about the rebel Andor. The series will have a total of two seasons with twelve episodes. A final trailer was shown at D23 2022 a few days ago.
