Hollywood legend George Lucas will be awarded the Golden Palm of Honor for his life’s work at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

Cinema legend George Lucas (79) will receive the Golden Palm of Honor for his life’s work at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. The justification is stated on the festival’s official website, Luca’s name is “inextricably linked to the ‘Star Wars’ and ‘Indiana Jones’ saga.” The author, director and producer has “given audiences around the world an incomparable pleasure” with his works.

George Lucas feels “truly honored”

The Golden Palm of Honor will be awarded to the now 79-year-old at the closing ceremony of the renowned festival, which this year takes place from May 14th to 25th. He thanked the Cannes Festival with a statement. “I am truly honored by this special recognition, which means a lot to me,” said Lucas. The festival has always had a special place in his heart since his directorial debut “THX 1138” was invited to the festival in 1971.

As the creator of “Star Wars” and director of the first part in 1977 as well as the controversial prequel trilogy, George Lucas is responsible for one of the most successful and popular film series of all time. Together with director legend Steven Spielberg (77), he also invented the legendary adventurer character Indiana Jones. Spielberg directed the first four installments in the series, while Lucas produced.

In addition, the “Star Wars” creator was also considered a technical genius who advanced the development of special effects with the company he founded, Lucasfilm. Lucas sold the company named after himself and the rights to “Star Wars” in October 2012 for over four billion US dollars to the Disney Group.

Last year, Hollywood stars Harrison Ford (81) and Michael Douglas (79) received the Palm of Honor for their life’s work in Cannes.
