Since the character of Ahsoka was introduced to the live-action Star Wars universe, lightsaber battles have been improved. And there is a simple explanation for this.
From films to films and series to series, the aesthetics, design and technical equipment implemented in the Star Wars universe have evolved considerably thanks to new technologies, each more innovative than the last.
The Mandalorian shed a little more light and democratized “The Volume”, a semi-circle of giant LED screens on which scenery is embedded and modified in real time, which allows you to do without real scenery and especially green backgrounds. .
Today, it is the turn of the Ahsoka series, whose broadcast recently ended on Disney+, to give the spotlight to a new technology, which will surely become essential since it touches on an essential object of the Star Wars universe: the lightsaber!
Best lightsabers with Ahsoka!
Since the acquisition of Lucasfilm by Disney, many improvements had been made to the lightsabers, notably in the postlogy, where the actors had light sticks, which allowed them to be more immersed in their fights but also to render the lighting more realistic, unlike the non-glow sticks used in the original trilogy and prelogy.
The downside to this improvement is that it made the lightsabers more difficult to handle since they featured heavy batteries. This explains the slower and stronger movements of the fights in the postlogy, unlike the prelogy where the fights were faster with more complex choreography.
But that is now ancient history since the character of Ahsoka has enabled a new revolution. Props designer Josh Roth explained during the Destination D23 event, relayed by ScreenRantthat Ahsoka’s lightsabers had been redesigned to fit batteries directly inside the hilts.
This allowed his interpreter Rosario Dawson to avoid having to carry the batteries in his sleeves, from his first appearance in season 2 of The Mandalorian and now in the Ahsoka series. Combat is more accessible to actors who have gained fluidity when using lightsabers and this reduces post-production work.
The dedicated teams have therefore found the right balance dreamed of by George Lucas with regard to accessories serving as lightsabers, powerful, luminous, fluid and less heavy.
These improvements to Jedi and Sith weapons will be a definite benefit for all future Star Wars projects, such as the Star Wars: Acolyte series or the next three planned films.
While waiting to find out if Ahsoka will get a second season, Star Wars fans are already eager to discover the next live-action series, Skeleton Crew.
Developed by Jon Watts (the director of the Spider-Man trilogy with Tom Holland), this new fiction, led by Jude Law, follows a group of teenage heroes after the end of the film Star Wars: Return of the Jedi.
