Upon its release on computer and next-gen consoles last April, Star Wars Jedi Survivor had disappointed the players with sawtooth performance: jerks, slowdowns… Today, despite several updates, the title published by Electronic Arts (EA) is still far from perfect. And, surprise, it will soon be ported to PS4 and Xbox One.

Despite its disappointing performance on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, Star Wars: Jedi Survivor will soon take the plunge to previous-generation systems, the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, as its publisher EA announced this week. A decision all the more surprising since developer Respawn Entertainment had previously implied that its game could only run on next-gen hardware.

Uneven Performance: The Painful Launch of Jedi Survivor

Star Wars Jedi: Survivorthe sequel to the acclaimed game Jedi: Fallen Order, was released at the end of April 2023, exclusively on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Last February, the director of the title, Stig Asmussen, said that the game would deliberately skip the PS4 and Xbox One, to take full advantage of the stability of the new consoles and offer a “true next-gen experience” : Wider, denser and more realistic game areas, with ever more enemies and NPCs on the screen.

Upon arrival, the promise was only partially kept. Despite satisfactory sales and good critical reception, the game encountered numerous bugs and performance problems on all systems, and in particular on PC, forcing EA to issue a public apology in a post published on the social network X.

Since then, Respawn has released several patches to improve the game’s performance, but as of now, the game remains flawed. Which hardly prevents EA from announcing, this 1er August 2023, that the game will soon be ported to new platforms: according to the publisher, Respawn is in the “early stages” development of a PlayStation 4 and Xbox One version of Jedi: Survivor.

A port on PS4 and Xbox One: a new challenge for Respawn Entertainment

At this time, neither EA nor Respawn have announced a release date for this PS4 and Xbox One port. They also didn’t give any further details as to the potential differences with the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions.

Still, given previous statements from Respawn and the game’s disappointing next-gen performance, the announcement of a port to two decade-old consoles is somewhat surprising. Although the news leaves us quite pessimistic, let’s hope that this transition will be without too much pain for the developers, for the game, and especially for the players.

Anyway, the Respawn teams now have a lot on their plate, with several projects in progress already announced: a new first-person shooter in the universe of Star Warsa strategy game Star Wars co-developed with the studio Bit Reactor, and the production of new content for the battle royale Apex Legends. With such a program, will the studio find the time to develop a sequel to Jedi: Survivor?
